Can’t afford coffee? No matter, There is a tradition called pending, suspended or Caffè sospeso. The pending coffee is an act of charity and generosity in which a person can pay for a pending or suspended coffee, it is an easy way of gifting a coffee to someone who can not afford it. This concept came from Italian tradition and culture.
The pending meal :
The pending meal is the concept taken from the concept of pending coffee, in the pending meal you can pay for another meal which can serve to any needy who will ask for it.
Pending meal and coffee both are a great way of showing generosity towards humanity. Today we are living in a world where millions of people can not afford a meal two times. If you walk in the night on the street then you can easily find them. The pending meal is a great way to help them. This is the way encouraging people to give back to the community by providing less fortunate with a meal so that no one has to stay hungry.
This tradition spread in various countries where you can order not only a suspended coffee but also fast food or a whole meal.
Although it is not a very effective way to help but it is small kindness to help needy one.
As per a newspaper:-
“This concept born in Naples during the Second World War, this habit came to symbolize solidarity in a very critic moment in Italian history. Those who could afford an espresso at the bar normally would pay for a second coffee to pay for a coffee many times they would pay for another one which would be left pending. This pending coffee would later be given to anyone who wished to have it (normally it would be someone poor or homeless).”
The tradition — born in the cafes of Italy’s southern city of Naples — sees people pay in advance for one or several coffees without drinking them.
There is a short story about The suspended coffee by sanfranciscobaycoffee :
We were in a small coffee shop.
Two customers arrive.
“5 coffees. 2 for us, 3 pending.”
They pay for the 5, they only get 2.
“What is a pending coffee? I ask.
“Wait and see”.
More customers. Two girls get coffees, they pay normally.
After a while, 3 lawyers ask for 7 coffees.
they drink only 3, but paid for all 7.
While we were talking, a poor man enters the shop.
With a soft voice, he asks “Do you have any pending coffee?”
This type of charity was born in Napoli (Naples, Italy).
People pay in anticipation for the coffees and even meals for others who can’t.
